Ashford Castle, Cong

Ashford Castle in Cong has been named one of the world's best hotels by the prestigious New York travel publication, Travel + Leisure.

The former summer residence of the Guinness family claimed the number three spot on the magazine's top 100 hotels in the world list, only being surpassed by an Indian palace on a private island and a 4,200 acre, 10th century Tuscan estate.

Niall Rochford, general manager of Ashford Castle, said the award "reinforces the commitment and dedication of our devoted staff who always strive to surpass guests’ expectations."

He said it also reflects the investment by the Tollman family in invigorating and restoring the 82-bedroom property, set on a 350-acre lakeside estate.

Ashford Castle was officially relaunched last April following an extensive, two-year revamp, reportedly costing more than €50 million.

The Tolllman family, founders of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, purchased the hotel in 2013.
