Man sentenced to 10 years for Mayo Abbey manslaughter

Twenty-three-year-old Ray Gralton has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the final two suspended, for killing mother of two Sara Staunton at her home in Mayo Abbey in December 2013.

Gralton, with an address at Mount Prospect, Roscommon, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Ms Staunton (28 ) died at her home at Portagh, Mayo Abbey, Claremorris, on December 13 2013.

The Central Criminal Court heard that Ms Staunton and Gralton were in a “turbulent relationship” for about a year prior to her death.

They fought physically on the night of December 13. During the course of the night, Gralton at one stage threw cans of beer at Ms Staunton’s head.

Ms Staunton went to bed that night but never woke up.
