Ladies look to get back on winning ways

On Sunday afternoon in Elverys MacHale Park the Mayo ladies senior football team will be looking to get back on winning ways when the take on Kerry in the penultimate round of the National Football League.

Frank Browne’s charges are in a four way battle for one of two places that still look to be up for grabs for spots the semi-final with two rounds left in the league. They are currently sitting in fifth place in the table on nine points, level with Sunday’s opponents, with the Kingdom just ahead of them by a single point on scoring difference keeping them in the play-off places. Galway sit just one point in front of Mayo and Kerry with Dublin one point behind them. The final round of games in the league will see Mayo host Galway at home on Sunday, April 12.

A fortnight ago Mayo fell to their second defeat of season when Monaghan were 3-12 to 1-8 winners over them in Blackhill. Mayo’s two defeats in the league this season have come at the hands of the two sides in the division, Cork and Monaghan so Browne can be confident that his side will have the goods to follow up their wins over Dublin, Tyrone and Laois with a fourth victory on Sunday afternoon.

Last time out Monaghan had ten points to spare of Mayo in a 3-12 to 1-8 win. Once again Mayo will be looking to Cora Staunton to lead the line for them in attack, the Carnacon ace has scored 2-42 in her five league games so far this season out of the 3-55 that Mayo have registered over their five games.

Kerry have record wins over same three teams that Mayo have beaten in the league and have also lost out to Cork, where they were beaten by the bare minimum by the Rebels, with Galway also picking up a win against the green and gold in the last round.

Sunday’s meeting between these sides should be a close encounter with the winner taking a major step towards a place in the play-off stages of the league.
