Castlebar golfers keen to prove dancing skills for Strictly fundraiser

Sixteen members of Castlebar Golf Club are getting ready to swap their spikes for dancing shoes and prove their skills on the dancefloor for a Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser on Saturday March 28 in the TF Royal Theatre.

The event is being organised in conjunction with Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

“Mayo Roscommon Hospice is a charity close to the members’ hearts,” said one of the organisers, Antoinette Starken. “Most of our members have had a relative or friends who have battled with cancer and have been comforted in the knowledge that they were well cared for in their later days by the kind and hard working staff of Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

“The dedication, patience, and kindness of the staff towards patients and family is truly more of a vocation than an occupation. Their work could never receive too many accolades.

“We hope we can raise enough funds to be of help in continuing the great work of the organisation.”

The golfers taking part are lady captain Pauline O’Donohue, John Mitchell, Padraig Corrigan, Deirdre Moylette, Martin Newcombe, Mary Fox, Fish Cunningham, Dympna Smyth, David Gallagher, Aoife Coyne , Joey McDonnell, Teresa Mannion, Paul Kilcourse, Cora Mulroy, Garry Wynne, and Ann Melvin

“Under the guidance of our gifted choreographer Jason Guthrie, our dancers are getting into the spirit of things and having great fun learning how to ballroom dance,” continued Ms Starken.

“Some lively, some graceful, some energetic, some sexy and some downright entertaining dances are being learnt for the public’s entertainment.

“Along with our own dancers we have some other entertainment on the night which, for now, we will keep as a surprise,” she added.

Tickets are on sale now through the golf club and cost €10 each.
