Knock to US flights by 2016, says airport boss

Knock airport chief Joe Gilmore has said he believes scheduled flights between IWAK and the US are on the cards for 2016.

The managing director of the aiport made the statement when he addresed a recent meeting of Mayo County Council’s special tourism policy committee.

He said the airport plans to double passenger numbers from 700,000 to 140,000 by 2025.

“We are hopeful of a scheduled network of flights to the states in 2016,” he stated.

Mr Gilmore said Ryanair currently accounts for 70 per cent of business at the airport and IWAK hopes to continue building on its relationship with the world’s biggest airline over the next 10 years.

Mr Gilmore said IWAK invested €350,000 in 2014 working in partnership with Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland to promote the west of Ireland overseas as a holiday destination.

He said IWAK is strongly positioned, as the main airport along the Wild Atlantic Way, to capitalise on tourism growth through the initiative.

“The Wild Atlantic Way is in its infancy stage but we should see the real benefits over the next five to 10 years,” said Mr Gilmore.
