The facts about hair loss and women

Hair loss is distressing but seeking help can make it less daunting

Hair loss affects both men and women, but for a woman hair loss can be particularly distressing as it can seriously impact on confidence levels, according to Mary Safo Ankoma, a hair loss and hair replacement expert at HnBC, Castlebar.

At HnBC, the most common type of hair loss the team see in women is androgenetic alopecia — known as female pattern baldness.

The condition starts off as hair thinning predominantly over the top or crown area and sides of the head.

It affects approximately one third of all at-risk women. It is most commonly seen after menopause although it may begin as early as puberty.

About hair loss

It is normal to loose between 100 and 150 hairs a day, but when these hairs are lost, they are usually replaced.

True hair loss occurs when these ‘lost hairs’ are not replaced or do not grow back and when daily hair shedding exceeds 150 hairs.

There are two different types of hair loss, medically known as anagen effluvium and telogen effluvium.

Anagen effluvium is generally due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, that kill the growing hair follicle.

Telogen effluvium is due to an increased number of follicles entering the resting stage. When the resting stage is prolonged, lost hairs are not replaced and hair loss occurs.

Telogen effluvium is most commonly caused by physical stress, emotional stress, thyroid abnormalities, certain medications, or hormonal changes due to pregnancy, birth control pills, or the menopause.

“When the causes of telogen effluvium are reversed or changed, usually one should notice the return of normal hair growth provided the scalp is clean to allow the hair to grow from a clean and opened follicle,” explained Mary Safo Ankoma of HnBC.

“HnBC provides a scalp scrub service with natural products.”

Dietary

“Hair loss could also be caused by dietary conditions,” continued Ms Safo Ankoma.

“When the body is not getting the right nutrients, this can cause hair loss. That is why at HnBC, we provide a holistic solution when it comes to hair loss or hair thinning.”

Regardless of what the cause of hair loss or hair thinning is, there is help out there, according to Ms Safo Ankoma.

“The team at HnBC would like to assure all who are affected with hair loss that they are not alone and they should not be afraid to seek help and advice.

Finding someone who understands what you are going through makes the period of hair loss less daunting, reducing the stress and, in most cases, the hair grows back.

“At HnBc we are proud to say some of our clients who suffered hair loss have had their hair grow back within a year.”
