‘No excuse’ for cruel puppy drowning at Moorehall, says Mayo SPCA

A woman who was home from the UK visiting family for the Christmas holidays made a sickening discovery while out walking at Moorehall with her mother on January 2, prompting local animal welfare charity, Mayo SPCA, to issue yet another appeal to pet owners on properly spaying and neuturing their dogs and cats.

Annie Kivlichin, of Mayo SPCA, said they received the call about the discovery of the litter of eight tiny puppies found drowned in an agricultural feed bag by the water at Moorehall.

“This really should be a thing of the past because of all the help that is now available,” said Ms Kivlichin.

“There is no excuse for this level of cruelty. The owner could have rung us for help. We would have assisted in having the bitch spayed and we would have assisted in finding homes for the pups.”

Ms Kivlichin said there is no way to trace the perpetrator of the cruel drowning. However, she is hoping someone might come forward with information.

“It is now illegal under the Animal Health & Welfare Act of March 2014 for any animal to be disposed of in an inhumane manner,” said Ms Kivlichin.

“We are all very concerned regarding the welfare of the bitch who could have mastitis, and would definitely be severely depressed.

“And also because, in all likelihood, this is going to keep happening to her again and again,” she added.

“We appeal for anyone with any information to please call us so we can help. Any information given will be treated in the strictest confidence of course.”

Mayo SPCA is a voluntary organisation which rescues and rehomes abandoned and mistreated animals. Last year, it rehomed more than 500 animals across the county.
