Morgue workers deliver chilling road safety message

Morgue workers are not usually thrust into the spotlight, but there are two in Mayo who are gaining national exposure in their aim to save lives with a chilling road safety message.

Dr Fadel Bennani, pathologist, and Sean Derrig, senior mortuary technician, have recorded a special video message to road users from their workplace - the county morgue - and posted it on Youtube.

They got involved in the road safety campaign to tell the public they never want to meet them in the course of their work.

Dr Fadel Bennani said they witness very disturbing scenes at their job and it is not something they ever get used to.

"The most tragic cases we see are the victims of road traffic accidents," said Dr Bennani. "The reason is because the injuries are usually so horrific."

Mr Derrig asked the public to be very careful on the roads and "think about safety at all times".

Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, said the campaign aims to make people think hard about the consequences of road carnage.

“Road collisions effect all in the community so we all have to help to prevent them,” he said.
