Winter Leagues in full swing

Golf

It was a busy weekend on the courses around Mayo last Saturday and Sunday, with some great scoring in the various Winter League's and club competitions.

Balla

Last weekend’s stableford competition was won by James Waldron who scored 37pts. His back nine play saw him take the win after Michael Gannon also arrived back to the clubhouse with a score of 37pts. Michael O’Connor finished in third place a point further back. The ladies’ stableford competition was won by Geraldine O’Malley who scored 35pts, she finished a point in front of Margaret Forkan on 34pts who came second, with Breege Jennings finishing in third place. The time sheet for the club Winter League is now up in the clubhouse, the league will get under way over the weekend of December 13 and 14.  The membership rates at Balla Golf Club have remained unchanged for the past five years at €200 for single membership; €285 for family membership; €70 for students; and €45 for youths.  

Ballina

The third round of the Winter League was won by the team of John Slater, John Carden, Ryan Moran, and Patrick Hallahan. Going into the final round of the league the teams captained by Pat Hopkins, Michael Brady, Darren Flaherty, and Liam Casey are the leading qualifiers, with Henry Bourke, Robert Bradwell, and David Finnerty’s teams leading the charge in the plate section.

Ballina’s Jonathan Doherty has been named as Connacht u18 Golfer of the Year. Jonathan Doherty put in some outstanding performances for Connacht in the junior inter-provincials at The Island club in Dublin in July.  

Ballinrobe

In the gents’ Winter Alliance fourth round Justin Keady was the winner of the category one section, with Richard Dooley winning the category two section and Vinny Larkin the category three prize. The ladies’ Winter Alliance saw Aine Melville take the win with Alish Gleeson finishing in second place.

Ballyhaunis

Alan Henry took the win in round four of the club Winter League last weekend with a score of 44pts, he finished two points in front of John Moran in second place, with Brian Philips coming home in third place a further three points behind. The ladies’ section was won by Anne Hussey, who scored 38pts, Anne Freeley finished in second place, three points behind Hussey, with Phil Glynn finishing in third place. The free golf competition was won by Liam Rochford.

Belmullet

The third round of the Winter League was won by Seán McAndrew  with a score of 41pts, second place went to Cormac Murray who finished just one point behind.

Castlebar

Colin Dawson won the men’s competition with 36pts, Tom Moylette was second with 35pts. In the ladies’ Maeve Nevin finished first, beating Ann Gallagher on the back nine when both ladies finished on 28pts. Connie White came home in third. The winter/spring leagues continue next weekend.

Claremorris

The fourth round of the CBE sponsored Winter League was won by Malachy Monahan who scored 36pts, second place went to Austin Winston two points further behind, Tom Burke came home in third place, with Nancy McHugh winning the ladies’ section with a score of 30pts.

Mulranny

The final qualifying round of the Mulranny Park Hotel winter league was completed at the weekend.  David Ryder confirmed his place as the top scoring golfer during the league with a fantastic 39pts for his 15 holes.  The McDonnell brothers, Christy and Tony, claimed second and third places with 34pts and 33pts respectively. The final of the league will take place on Saturday December 6 with a shotgun start at 10.30am.
