Mayo coders are first to sign up to European Code Week

Two teams from Mayo are leading the way for Ireland this week having signed up to take part in the second ever European Code Week, which takes place from Saturday October 11 to Saturday October 18 all across Europe. The Charlestown and Castlebar Coderdojo clubs have both registered Code Week events.

The aim of the week is to connect individuals, groups and companies interested in coding in a fun and sociable way. Within Ireland, European Code Week is an opportunity to confirm Ireland’s position as the coding hub of Europe, thereby encouraging further creation of IT opportunities and careers for our young people.

In 2013, Ireland took gold for their contribution to European Code Week with 150 events happening in 14 counties and an estimated 155,000 people involved. By week’s end, of the 25 European countries taking part, Ireland had taken the title of Digital Trailblazer for Europe with participation levels beyond the organisers’ expectations. This year organisers are hoping to have equally high participation levels and full listings of all events are available at www.events.codeweek.eu

It’s still not too late to get involved and organisers are calling on all schools, CoderDojo clubs and scratch teams, as well as computer clubs and workplaces to join them during the week. You can get involved by running an event, host an exhibition or simply get together to have fun coding and discussing process throughout the week. To tell us what you are up to and add your event to the Irish listings for the week simply send details to [email protected].
