EirGrid to host information clinics in Ballina

Over the next four Tuesdays EirGrid will be holding information clinics in the Grid West Information Centre on Bury Street in Ballina.

Members of the public can book an appointment with the project team who will be on hand at the clinics by calling 1890 940802. The clinics will take place between 4pm and 8pm, on Tuesday October 14, Tuesday October 21, Tuesday October 28 and Tuesday November 4.

The Grid West project is EirGrid’s plan to develop a new high-capacity power connection, linking north Mayo to a strong point on the national grid. Grid West is part of EirGrid’s Grid25 strategy to upgrade the national grid between now and 2025 to deliver a sustainable, competitive, and secure electricity supply to homes, businesses, and industries.

In January 2014, it was announced that it would undertake a comprehensive analysis of an underground route for the project. This analysis will be route specific and completed to the same level of detail as the overhead line option. Analysis of the underground and overhead options will be reviewed by the Government-appointed independent expert panel. This will provide assurance to the public that both the overhead and underground options are considered in a fair, objective, and comparable way. Work on both options is being advanced in line with the terms of reference set by the panel.

No decision has yet been made on what will be the chosen solution for the Grid West project. The independent expert panel have indicated that they hope to be in a position to provide an opinion on this work early next year. After this, and with guidance from the Government and the Regulator, EirGrid will make a decision on the most appropriate solution for the project.
