Council refuses planning for golf practice area

Mayo County Council has refused planning permission for a seven bay, floodlit practice area at Ballina Golf Club.

Ballina Golf Club applied to retain the facility on May 6 of this year after it received communication from the enforcement section of Mayo County Council.

The facility was refused planning permission because of the health and safety risk posed to residents of a neighbouring residential development by the possibility of stray golf balls from the practice area. Planners also noted noise and the floodlights could affect neighbouring residents.

A number of Mossgrove Village residents made submissions to Mayo County Council during the planning process.

They described how their property and green areas in the estate have been bombarded with flying golf balls since the practice area opened.

One resident said the windscreen of her parked car was shattered by a stray golf ball earlier this year.

The club now has four weeks to appeal the refusal to An Bord Pleanala.
