Big names for MMA showdown spectacle in Castlebar

It is fast becoming one of the most popular sports in the world and now MMA is coming west. A major MMA event is taking place in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, on Sunday August 3, with some of the top competitors in the county coming to town to do battle for the inaugural West Cage Fighting Championships. This is an opportunity for fans of the sport to witness firsthand the spectacle of an all-out, full-scale MMA event. There will be 10 fights over the course of the night, with each contest being decided over three, three-minute, rounds.

Some of the big name attractions on the night include John Kavanagh from SBG, who is travelling to Mayo with his coach John Kavanagh, and former Irish international rugby player Peter Bracken.

The local team is made-up of fighters from Westport, Castlebar, and Crossmolina, with Castlebar's Alex Masuku fighting for a shot at the welterweight WCFC title in November. The official weigh-in takes place in Rocky's Bar, Castlebar, at 2pm on August 2.

Impetus Castlebar

Impetus Castlebar is an MMA club founded by Piotr Nowacki to promote the sport in the west of Ireland. The club has 30 members who compete at the highest level in the sport in Ireland. Impetus is currently listed as one of the top five clubs in the Irish MMA League. The club is headquartered at McHale Retail Park, Castlebar.

Nowacki fights in some of the biggest shows in Ireland, including Cage Contender, Clan Wars and Celtic Gladiator. He was ranked the number two heavyweight in Ireland in 2011. The club’s head coach is Pawel Guba, a black belt in judo, who was the All Ireland judo champion in 2011.
