Funding boost for CF unit at Mayo General

The construction of a new dedicated day unit for cystic fibrosis sufferers in the county received a boost this week. The project has been allocated €50,000 in National Lottery Funding.

The total cost of the project is €1.3 million. Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and CF West have already fundraised €900,000 for the unit.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny welcomed the funding announcement.

“The new day unit will mean that there will, for the first time, be a stand-alone centre for treating people with cystic fibrosis in Mayo General Hospital,” said Mr Kenny. “This will be done through the provision of a safe environment including specially designed air filtrated assessment rooms, and this news means that we are now a big step closer to seeing that a reality.”

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic, inherited, disease that affects the lungs and digestive system, leading to malnutrition, lung infections, and reduced life expectancy.

It affects 1,200 children and adults in Ireland.
