Judge calls last orders for Newport man

A barman has been banned from all licensed premises other than his place of work because of his unruly behaviour outside a nightclub in Castlebar.

Castlebar District Court heard last week that Brian Martin, Brockagh, Newport, was arrested at 1am on February 14, outside the Welcome Inn Hotel, New Antrim Street, Castlebar, after he became aggressive when he was told he was too drunk to be admitted.

Gardaí arrived to the nightclub to find 30-year-old Martin, who works as a barman in Westport, being restrained by security workers.

When the security staff released him, he became aggressive and lunged at the Garda patrol car, striking the rear of the vehicle with his head.

Judge Alan Mitchell told Martin that his behaviour was “not acceptable”.

He said gardaí have a difficult enough job to do without dealing with this type of behaviour.

Solicitor for Martin, Cathy McDarby, said her client accepted he was “out of control” on the night.

Judge Mitchell fined Martin €250 and ordered him to stay out of all licensed premises in district three - effectively barring him from every pub and off-licence in Mayo other than his place of work - for a period of six months.
