Custom House Studios exhibition inspired by fishing, family, and the mayfly

Two exhibitions of art are continuing at the Custom House Studios in Westport.

Cora Murphy’s exhibition, Tight Lines, is inspired by family, fishing, the lakes of Mayo, and the 24-hour lifecyle of the mayfly.

The artist’s family have been fishing Lough Mask and Lough Carra for over 50 years. Every May, her father, grandfather and a raggle-taggle of children would make an annual pilgrimage across the country in pursuit of the Mayfly and the trout that might follow it.

She grew up thinking of the lakes as mythical places of bounty and beauty.

She began her Tight Lines series while on residency at The Custom House in May 2011. In the intermittent years she has been developing the work to inform a larger body of paintings.

The exhibition continues until June 2.

Custom House Studios is also hosting an exhibition of new paintings by Cormac O’Neill, entitled Metamorphology - possibilities of change/changing possibilities, until June 2.

Cormac O’Neill is a painter who likes to use simple materials and works by hand. At a time of technological fascination, he is interested in how the hand can convey sensation, hesitancy and intensity, emotion and incompletion.

He draws on inspiration from Eastern and Western spiritual and philosophical thought and poetry.

Cormac O’Neill moved back to Ireland with his wife and children in 2004 and lives in the countryside outside Galway. Since returning, his work has been shown in G126, The Basement Project, Cork, The Russell Gallery, New Quay, The Town Hall, Galway, and the RHA Annual.
