Christmas Catwalk

Enjoy and evening of fashion, food and fun in Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar on Friday November 15.

Doors open at 7pm. The event is in aid of Castlebar Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre and Castlebar Soroptimists’ Music for Mental Health Project.

Rainbows’ course in Claremorris

Rainbows / Spectrum is a peer-support programme to assist children and young people experiencing a significant loss in their lives through a death, separation or divorce in their family. Rainbows helps by providing a safe setting in which children and young people can share their feelings, emotions and struggles with others who have similar experiences. They are supported in this process by a trained facilitator.

The programme is run over a 12 week period one evening per week and will commence on November 4 at 6.15pm in Cúram Family Centre, Claremorris. There is no charge to families who avail of this programme. Booking is essential on 094 936 2096.

Walk for Cancer Society

Cuffe’s Centra, Belmullet is holding a charity walk for the Irish Cancer Society on October 20 at 2.30pm.

Meeting at Aras Inis Gluaire. €10. Call in to the shop or register on the day.

BRI group

The next meeting of the Brain Injury Support Group is on Monday October 21 in Le Cheile Family Resource Centre, Tucker St, Castlebar at 7.30pm.

This meeting is for people who have or are experiencing a brain injury as a result of an aneurysm, stroke, fall or accident. Refreshments are provided. Contact 087 168 5554 for more information

Charlestown Arts Centre

Charlestown Arts Centre is delighted to present The Invisible Circus an exhibition by ShelkyBean.

Lecture in Ballina

North Mayo West Sligo Heritage Group is presenting an illustrated lecture in The Merry Monk, Killala Road, Ballina on Saturday October 26 at 8pm entitled The Music of Emigration.

The speaker will be well known RTE and BBC broadcaster, Marcus O Murchu. He will discuss, using new technologies and old recordings the emigrants, many from the west of Ireland who went to American in the twentieth century.

Speed dating in Swinford

A speed dating event for those aged 35 to 50 will take place in Julian's in Midfield, Swinford on Friday October 18.

A dancing night for all ages will take place on October 25.

Castlebar Order of Malta is holding a dinner dance the celebrate its 70th anniversary on November 2 in the Welcome Inn, Castlebar.

Ballina’s Halloween Festival

Every year during the mid-term break, Ballina Chamber of Commerce stages Samhain Abhainn, the town’s very own Halloween Festival.

And every year, thousands of children from across Mayo and Sligo enjoy the famous walks through Belleek Woods – at night!

The Scary Woods Walks, organised in association with Mayo Arts Squad and Ballina Stephenites GAA Club, take place on the evenings of 27, 28 and 29 October from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m, and admission is just €3.

Endurance Challenge

Organisers of the Endurance Challenge 2,068km triathlon (which will take place in August 2014 ) will be in Westport on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October for a regional launch to drive awareness of and support for the event.

Those interested in participating in the event are invited along to a free promotional evening on Friday October 25 at Hotel Westport. The following day those interested in kickstarting their training can join in a free promotional 5k fun run or 18k fun cycle.

Cake sale

Rua Delicatessen, Spencer Street, Castlebar, will host a fundraising cake and bake sale in conjunction with students from St Joseph’s Secondary School on Sunday October 20 from 12pm to 5pm. Lots of delicious buns, tray bakes and cakes, baked by the students, will be on sale during the day. Rua Café will also contribute €1 from every dessert sold in their café to help the fundraising on the day.

The Charlestown Voice

A new magazine called the Charlestown Voice is to be launched by Marion Harkin MEP. The launch will take place on October 19 at the Art Centre at 8.30pm. The magazine will be on sale in all outlets around Charlestown and it retails at €5.

Knock Counselling Centre

Knock Counselling Centre will host an evening with clinical psychologist, broadcaster, author and columnist, David Coleman on Thursday November 28 at the Rest and Care Centre, Knock Shrine. The talk Effective Communication with Children and Teenagers will be followed by Parenting and Family Life. Tickets are €25. Social media seminar

Following the very successful club development social media seminar held in Castlebar last year, Mayo Sports Partnership is calling all sports clubs in the region to sign up for the 2013 social media seminar for Erris sports clubs in the Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet on Monday October 21 from 7pm to 9.30pm.

Festival in Swinford

The bank holiday weekend Swinford will hold the John Feeney Tenor Festival which will celebrate the magnificent tenor voice of John (Jack ) Feeney, Swinford’s most famous son. The John Feeney evening will take place on Friday October 25 at 8pm in the Gateway Hotel.

O’Connor’s on Main Street will host the official opening of Féile Na Samhna on Saturday October 26 at 3pm. Mellett’s emporium will be the ideal venue for the traditional singing club on Saturday at 8.30pm. At 12:45pm, on Sunday the excellent local Midfield Pipe Band will give a marching band exhibition through the town. On Sunday afternoon at 5pm the main event and theme of the Féile Na Samhna will unfold in the Gateway Hotel. A historical walk will be led by local historian, Michael Comer, on Monday 28 at 11am.

Wizard Walk

The boys from St Patrick’s National School in Castlebar will take part in their annual Wizard Walk on October 25. A novel fundraising idea with the parents’ association, the colourful parade consists of pupils, teachers and parents in Halloween costume marching through the streets in a blast of noise and fun. The parade starts at 9.30am and goes through Main Street.

Donate a dress

A fashion event in aid of the western Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland will take place on November 16 in Breaffy House Hotel. The idea is to get the general public to donate a dress which can be sold on the night.

A pop up shop will be in the hotel from 7pm to 9pm (admission free ) and then a fashion show (admission €10 ) to model the key pieces will be held after.

Anyone who has dresses to donate can drop them off at Castlebar and Foxford Day Care Centres or call Frances on 086 836 6312 or Christina on 094 902 7761 to arrange collection of dresses.
