Mayo girls go for European glory

Mayo’s talented young boxers will be out in force in European competition over the next five weeks. Mayo will have six boxers participating in the Women’s European Union Senior and Youth Championships in Keszthely, Hungary, next month. Seven time national champion Jacqui Lynch (Golden Gloves BC ) will be in action in the championships. Lynch won double National titles this season and is having a fantastic season. The Belmullet boxer won the National title and two weeks later was victorious in the Girl 15, (48 kg ) division.

Lycia Heneghan (Ballinrobe BC ) won her fifth national title this season including the under 21 title and under 18 title. Cathy Higgins (Ardnaree BC ) defeated two national champions and a European bronze medallist to win the under 18, (75kg ) national title this season. Grainne Gavin (Castlebar BC ) will participate in her first international in the Europeans next week, another double national title winner this season the Castlebar boxer captured the Girl Under 15 (54kg ) national title and the senior cadet title. Ciara Ginty (Geesala BC ) was defeated in the national championships but bounced back a fortnight later in the Girl 15 (60kg ) senior cadet title.

Twice national title winner Ciara Sheedy (Swinford BC ) won the under 15 (63kg ) title earlier this season and also won the senior cadet title two weeks later. All six girls were recipients of awards presented by the Mayo Boxing Board at a gala celebration last weekend to celebrate the County Board’s 80th anniversary. Eric Nash (Knockmore BC ) and Kasper Buru (St Anne’s BC ) will represent Ireland at the European Schoolboys Championships at the City West Hotel in Dublin over July and August.
