Mayo Centra Stores help raise over half a million for Action Breast Cancer

Fifteen Centra stores in Mayo have helped raise more than €500,000 for the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer in 2012. This is Centra’s third year providing nationwide support to the charity with all funds raised going to provide information, advice and support services for women with breast cancer in Ireland.

Casey and McShane’s Centra Ballina, Roche’s Centra Balla, Murphy’s Centra Ballinrobe, Raftery’s Centra Claremorris, Cuffe’s Centra Belmullet, Walsh’s Centra Kilmaine, Hoban’s Centra The Quay and James Street in Westport, O’Hara’s Centra Foxford, Hennigans’ Centra Ballindine, Mitchell’s Centra Moygownagh, Munnelly’s Centra Crossmolina, Sheridan’s Centra Newport, Casey’s Centra Castlebar, and Campbell’s Centra Killala joined forces with Centra stores nationwide in October 2012 and generated the much needed funds through a dynamic fundraising campaign.

Collectively, Centra stores across the country sold 39,000 Centra limited edition pink umbrellas, with all proceeds going to Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer. In Mayo, Raftery’s Centra Claremorris and Munnelly’s Centra Crossmolina organised a pink umbrella walk within their local community and collectively raised more than €2,500 through this fundraising initiative alone. A host of other initiatives added to the overall figure, including Centra Own Brand pink milk and pink flowers, as well as local community events such as coffee mornings, fashion shows, and fancy dress balls. Through the Get the Girls Round initiative, women rallied together in their droves and hosted some 600 girls’ night-in, in aid of the charity.

Commenting on the funds announcement John McCormack, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, said: “I would like to thank all the customers and staff of Centra who contributed to the success of this campaign. The support has been wonderful for so many reasons. Not only in terms of raising vital funds but also increasing the level of breast awareness; getting people more active, which is a key way to reduce your risk of cancer; and creating solidarity, shown in the great numbers which turned out for each event.”
