Council pay tribute to late employee

The May meeting of Mayo County Council was adjourned after an hour to mark the passing of council employee Gerry Callaghan of Tullinacurra, Swinford who passed away last weekend.

Mr Callaghan, who was an overseer, was spoken of glowingly by a number of councillors and by the executive at last Monday’s council meeting. Cllr Joe Mellet proposed the adjournment and passed on his sympathies to the Callaghan family. Cllr Jimmy Maloney seconded the adjournment and said, “He’ll be a massive loss to Mayo County Council and to his family after his sudden death.” County manager Peter Hynes joined in the tributes, telling the meeting, “He was a loyal hardworking member of Mayo County Council who will be very much missed by all”. The late Mr Callaghan was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon in Kilconduff cemetery following his funeral Mass in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Swinford.
