Gardaí appeal for information following spate of crimes across the county

Gardaí in Mayo are today continuing to investigate a spate serious crimes which occurred during the week — including an attempted armed robbery from a filling station in Claremorris, an aggravated burglary from a house in Killasser, and a stabbing in Castlebar.

It has been reported that in the early hours of Tuesday May 7, between 1.30am and 1.45am, an armed man attempted to rob a petrol station near Claremorris. The man, who was armed with a sword, entered Vivo Filling Station on the N17 at Lisduff, Claremorris, and threatened a staff member while demanding money. The male was confronted by the petrol station owner and left the scene without obtaining any money.

As the armed man fled, a garda who was on patrol in the area observed the suspicious activity and chased the man, however a getaway car arrived at the scene and the robber got away. The getaway car is believed to be a Subaru .

The robber is described as six foot in height, of slim build, and he was wearing a blue jacket and black tracksuit pants with white stripes.

Gardaí in Claremorris are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 937 1222.

The following day, Wednesday May 8, at 4am, there was an aggravated burglary at Carrowleambeg, Killasser. Two people entered a house where they demanded car keys from the home owner, and the car was taken. The owner received minor injuries during the incident. Gardaí later recovered the stolen car, which was burned out nearby.

Shortly after this burglary, gardaí were informed of an attempted burglary in the Foxford area at Attymachugh. However the intruders fled the scene as the house alarm was activated.

Earlier in the week, on Bank Holiday Monday, a teenager was stabbed in Castlebar at 1.35pm. A 19-year-old man who was arrested following the stabbing on Market Square, Castlebar, appeared before Roscommon District Court on Tuesday, and was remanded in custody to Harristown District Court on Thursday. A file is being prepared for the DPP.
