Mayo need to pick points against Orchard visitors

The Mayo senior hurlers go looking for their first win of the season when they host Armagh in McHale Park on Sunday in the curtain raiser to the footballers’ encounter with Kildare. Throw-in in this game is at 5.15pm and gives the Mayo GAA crowd a great chance to come out and support the small ball game. Saturday evening’s opponents for Mayo have a one win from two games record coming into Saturday’s game, losing out to London at home on the opening day of the league by 0-22 to 0-14, before a third quarter blitz last Sunday saw them beat Roscommon on a scoreline of 3-15 to 2-11 in Athleague.

Centre-half-forward Declan Coulter was the main man for the men in orange, scoring 1-8 for his side over the 70 minutes, with full-forward Conor Corvan chipping in with 2-2. Armagh blitzed Roscommon, scoring 3-3 to 0-1 inside the opening 16 minutes of the second half to set up the win.

For Mayo, last weekend’s game against Meath was a real game of two halves with Mayo losing out on a scoreline of 1-19 to 1-11 to Meath in Trim. Christy Philips’ side were dealt a blow before the game with both Keith Higgins and Pa Connell not being able to line out with the side. The Royals played with a stiff breeze in the first half and went at the break leading by 1-14 to 0-1, giving Mayo a huge hill to climb after the turn around. Mayo did manage to win the second half 1-10 to 0-5 but it was not good enough to overturn the huge lead the hosts had built up over the first 35 minutes. Despite only really playing in the second half there were good performances from Donal O’Brien, Aiden Connolly, Padraig O’Flynn, Nathan O’Malley, Kenny Feeney and Sean O’Regan for Philips’ side.

A win is a must for Mayo with only two more games left in the division after tomorrow evening’s game, at home to London next Sunday at the early throw in time of 12.45pm and away to Down in Páirc Esler in Newry on Sunday fortnight, March 31.
