Spring leagues in full swing around the clubs of Mayo

Balla

Vinnie Gibbons was the winner of the men’s competition last weekend in Balla after scoring back 34pts. His back nine play on the last few holes kept him just out in front of John O’Connor in second and Bernie O’Connor in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Geraldine Kilgallon who also scored 34pts, second place went to Breege Moran, and Aine McSuibhnie finished in third place. The Winter League after nine rounds sees Jimmy Sheridan and Breege Moran in the lead on 431pts, Chris Mannion and Tim Evans are chasing them down on 418pts in second place, and John O’Connor and Nora Gibbons are third on 413pts.

Ballina

In the Spring League the team of Darren Flaherty, Glen Forde, Des Fox and Owen Clancy were the winners last weekend with a score of 51.7.

Castlebar

Sean Haugh was the winner of the 16 hole competition last weekend in Castlebar Golf Club with a score of 41pts. Stephen Minogue came home in second place on 39pts, with Greg Barry taking third with 38pts following a count-back. Meanwhile the ladies played a 13 hole stableford competition and the winner was Breda Gilvarry with 32pts. Maeve Nevin was second with 31pts and Mary Lawlor took third on 29pts.

The ladies’ Spring League sponsored by Cox’s reached the fifth round last week. The best team in the round was Team P; Derval Molloy, Maeve Nevin, Nancy Rowland Anne O’Sullivan, and Ann Melvin who scored 81pts. Team F captained by Mary Lawlor sit on top of the table with a score of 389pts, with Team M captained by Terri Fahy in second place.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s round of the Spring League saw Peter Hynes come home in first on 38pts, Eamon Doherty finished in second place on 36pts, and Brian McGuinness on 34pts finished in third place. The ladies’ section was won by Catherine McEvaney.

Mulranny

Improved weather conditions over the weekend saw a surge in scoring returns at the Mulranny Open Weekend. This was due in no small measure to the visiting society from Hollister, Ballina, whose golfers filled the top three places. An impressive 45pts was recorded by society captain, Bobby Eades, to claim first prize. The regular season will commence on Saturday/ Sunday March 2 and 3 with a foursomes competition. The winning pair will represent Mulranny in the Daily Mail National Foursomes competition.

Swinford

Even in some very trying conditions there was a good turn out in the ladies’ Spring League in Swinford over the last few weeks. Last weekend Dympna O’Donnell was the winner with a score of 24pts, while Carmel Timoney finished in second place on 21pts after a count-back. The previous week Patricia Feeney was the winner on 22pts with Bernie Walsh finishing in second place on 21pts.

Westport

In the gents’ stableford 15 hole competition Michael Morrison was the winner on 36pts with John Gerard Moran finishing in second also on 36pts on handicap scoring.
