Man took out loans in other people’s names to fund his son’s education

A former employee of a credit company took out four third party loans in the names of previous customers for his benefit and also failed to lodge payments made by clients.

On September 3 2012 the area manager of Provident Personal Credit, a financial services company, made a complaint to gardaí about a former agent Sean O’Doherty, Cortoon, Manulla.

O’Doherty, who had been an agent for the company from February 2011 to February 2012, pleaded guilty to falsifying the signatures of four previous customers to take out loans for €2,300. The defendant also failed to lodge €270 from payments received from customers.

The defendant paid back €565 towards the loans, however when the loans fell into arrears the customers were contacted and it came to light that they had not taken out these loans. In February 2012, O’Doherty sent a letter of resignation to his employer in which he stated that he had done wrong.

The 49-year-old father of three has no previous convictions. Solicitor John Geary said that his client had given an undertaking to pay back the money as soon as the case was settled and €300 was in court. Mr Geary said that his client was “deeply ashamed and embarrassed” but the money was taken as his son’s grant for college did not come through and he was “desperate” to financially assist him.

Judge Mary Devins remanded him on continuing bail to March 19 for a probation report.
