Fresh start for couples

Often we think of January as the best month to make a fresh start in our lives. As the new year approaches, we make personal commitments to make life more worth-living. But for some couples, January is also the time they end their relationship.

Christmas is considered one of the most stressful times of the year. There are plenty of things to attend to – shopping, visiting the in-laws, cooking, organising parties, etc. While these things sound enjoyable, they tend to be emotionally and financially stressful for some. For instance, many couples often find themselves facing a credit crunch due to the high spending over the holidays.

When couples cannot meet their expectations for Christmas, misunderstandings and arguments arise. And because the holiday season is stuffed with lots of activities, couples usually find it hard to sit down and talk about their problems. But as January strikes and everything goes back to normal, they struggle to hold things together.

While many couples tend to view separation or divorce as the best solution to resolve their marital conflicts, years of research suggest that it does have devastating emotional and mental effects not just to the couples but to their children as well.

Before heading down that road every couple should first try to strengthen and improve their marriage. How?
