Lots to see and do at the Museum of Country Life this weekend

Running until the end of June The Irish Headhunter is an exhibition of 63 early photos from the west coast of Ireland taken in the 1890s. This exhibition focuses on the photographs of Charles R Browne, taken along the west coast of Ireland. Browne was a medical doctor and anthropologist who undertook physical surveys of people for Trinity College, Dublin. These surveys were mainly carried out in West Kerry, the Aran Islands, South Connemara, Erris, Clare Island and Inishturk in County Mayo. The photographs are full of human interest and also convey a lot of detail about the clothes worn at the time. The exhibition is supplemented by information on the international context of eugenics at the time.

Today, Friday January 18 from 11am to 1pm you can take part in the drop in knitting circle in the museum. Enthusiasts and beginners alike are welcome to join the museum knitters as they share skills, patterns, and chat. Starter kits for children are available. No booking is required.

Tomorrow, Saturday January 19, from 12 noon to 3.30pm Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon will be screened. Barry Lyndon (1975 ) is a period film by Stanley Kubrick. It recounts the exploits of an unscrupulous 18th century Irish adventurer and bears a close resemblance to the exploits of George Robert Fitzgerald, who is featured in Zoffany’s portrait of the Fitzgerald family (1764 ). No booking is required.
