Westport and Ballina look to join Celtic in sixth round

Mayo soccer supporters will be hoping that Ballina Town and Westport United will be able to follow in the footsteps of Castlebar Celtic and book their place in the sixth round of the Umbro FAI Junior Cup on Sunday.

The all conquering Westport United side will be making the long trek to Laois to take on Crettyard United, who happen to ply their trade in Carlow Leagues and have been a top side in that league for a number of years.

Meanwhile Ballina Town will have the comfort of a home game on Sunday when they welcome Kilbarrack United to Belleek. This is going to be a serious test for Ballina with the Dublin AUL side getting to the final of last year’s Junior Cup, going down to Sheriff United 3-1 in the final. Both games kick off at 2pm.

Castlebar Celtic headed south last weekend in the fifth round of the FAI Junior Cup last Sunday and came home with the win. The long trek to the home of Rosegreen Rangers was made worthwhile thanks to a comfortable 4-0 win. James McGurrin opened the scoring with Peter Dravins chipping in with the second goal, before a Ronan O’Boyle double sealed the win for the Hoops.

The Celtic ladies’ side lost out 2-1 at home to DLR Waves in their first game of 2013 in front of large crowd in Celtic Park last Sunday. The Hoops’ ladies’ side will be at home again this weekend when they welcome Cork Women’s to Celtic Park at 2pm on Sunday. Celtic are currently sitting in fourth place in the table with two wins from their six games so far.

Mayo wait for Oscar Traynor opponents

The Mayo League were drawn to face Limerick in the quarter final of the Oscar Traynor Trophy this week, providing they get over their last 16 game. In that game Michael Hutton’s side have been pulled out of the hat to face the winners of Group 4 which has still to be decided. That group will be won by either the Wexford League or the Tipperary Southern District League, so Hutton’s side will be away in these games and more long trips on the road await if Mayo are successful.

All eight quarter finalists for the Masters Cup now known

On Wednesday night in Milebush four teams booked their places in the last eight of the Oliver Kelleher Masters Cup. Straide and Foxford United had a more than comfortable 6-1 win over their club’s B team in the first of two games that kicked off at 7pm. The second game to kick off at that time also saw a side go through by five goals with Glenhest Rovers beating Swinford 9-4.

The second round of games on the night saw Fahy Rovers and Iorras Aontaithe play out a 3-3 draw with the Iorras men winning out 4-2 on penalties. The last game of the night was between Urlar United and Newport Town with Urlar booking their place in the last eight 6-4. The four winners from Wednesday night will join Claremorris, Manulla, Fahy Rovers B, and Castlebar Celtic in the last eight.
