Castlebar

The members of Castlebar golf club turned out in force in memory of a great friend of the club for the Tommy Moylette Memorial played last weekend. The course staff have been doing some great work on the greens over the last week, with the greens expected to be back to their best in another week.

Despite this there were some great scores posted. Michael Kilcourse won the men’s section with a great 42. Brendan Frost was second with score of 40, and Michael Sheridan was third with 39 points.

Recent junior Connacht boys team representative Darragh Judge won the gross with a score of 33. Jonathan Morley continued his great recent form by winning best junior with score of 34. Mary Fox shone in the ladies’ section with a great score of 36, with Ger Lyons, continuing a great year, coming in second with a 36 also. Gina Kelly celebrated her birthday with a great 35.

After a long and sometimes arduous campaign the 2012 Barcastle Trophy Club Fourball Championship finally reached its final stage when Kevin O'Boyle and Noel O'Malley faced off against father and son combination Val and Mark Jennings on Sunday September 16. With conditions proving quite challenging, a blustery breeze and occasional showers, this promised to be a thrilling and tight match and so it proved with Val and Mark Jennings finally winning it on the 17th hole. The time sheet for the men’s winter league is up in the clubhouse.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Suttons Oil was won by Paul Kenna on a score of 67. Niall Maxwell was the next man on the podium in second place, with Malachy Monahan finishing in third, and the category prize going home with Padraic McHugh.

The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Walsh who scored 39pts, with Marie Healy finishing second one point behind, and Riana Kean won the nine hole competition.

Mulranny

Mulranny failed in its bid to recapture the Grainne Uaile title at windswept Belmullet on Sunday. The Achill team had no intention of slipping up again this year and increased their second round lead to eventually have 21 pts to spare over Mulranny, with holders Belmullet in third place.

Mulranny’s best performers were veterans Liam Walshe and Christy McDonnell who scored 44pts, with Mick O’Donnell and David Ryder recording 41pts and Noel O’Malley and Colam O’Neill next best on 40pts. So it’s back to the drawing board for next season.

Club activities resume next weekend with a stableford competition, sponsored by Newport Credit Union. You may play on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Entries are also being taken for the Mulranny Park Hotel Winter League. Teams of four cost €80 and full details are posted in the clubhouse. Outstanding matches in the second round of the Autumn Cup should be played ASAP. The club outing to Castlebar takes place on Saturday October 6. There are only a few places left to be filled so hurry and get your name on the list.
