All Mayo bathing areas are of a ‘good’ standard — EPA report

Bathing waters in the county achieved ‘good’ status in The Environmental Protection Agency’s Quality of Bathing Water in Ireland report.

Mayo County Council was only one of five local authorities which achieved ‘good’ status for all of its 15 designated bathing areas: Ross Beach, Killala; Rinroe Beach, Carrowtigue; Elly Bay, Belmullet; Mullaghroe Beach, Belmullet; Dugort Beach, Achill; Keel Beach, Achill; Keem Beach, Achill; Dooega Beach, Achill; Golden Strand, Achill; Mulranny Beach; Bertra Beach, Murrisk; Old Head Beach, Louisburgh, Carrowmore Beach, Louisburgh; Carrowniskey; Louisburgh; and Clare Island.

“While compliance with current bathing water quality standards is high, stricter standards will take effect from 2014 and these will require greater vigilance to ensure our bathing waters continue to be among the best in Europe,” said Laura Burke, EPA director general.

Throughout the 2012 bathing season, up-to-date bathing water quality information, as provided by the local authorities, will be displayed on www.bathingwater.ie The site also gives information on the compliance history of each bathing area, details of blue flag status, bathing safety, weather, and tidal information, along with aerial photography.
