Winter League finals around Mayo

Balla

Last weekend’s stableford competition was won by Aodán Mac Suibhne with a score of 36pts, PJ Brett came home in second place on 33pts with his scoring on the back nine, holding off Martin King who came third also on 33pts. In the ladies’ competition Geraldine Evans won with a score of 36pts, Geraldine Kilgallon come home in second on 33pts, with Carmel Hevernan finishing third. A large number of people took part in the David Barrett memorial scramble with a lovely lunch being served afterwards in the Rendezvous in Balla. The winners of the competition was the trio of Breege Walsh, Noel Healy, and Fenton Barrett. Second place went to Marie Flanagan, Geraldine Kilgallon and Kitty O’Connor. The third placed team was made up of John O’Connor, Joe Healy, and Seamus Cleary. Brendan Ginley was the winner of the nearest the pin prize.

Ballina

Both the main final and plate final of the winter league were held on Sunday November 27. The weather on the day smiled kindly on the teams and the occasion was extremely well supported.

Winners on the day were the team of Liam Casey, John Forde, PJ Ruddy and Catherine Egan. In second place was Darren Flaherty, Alan Egan, Nicky McLoughlin, and Teresa Maguire. The plate final was won by John Bourke, Noel Hopkins, PJ Corrigan and Jamie Cawley, with second place going to Paddy O'Donnell, John Fox, Michael Howley and Elaine O'Hora.

Castlebar

Last weekend Castlebar had its first Turkey competition for 2011. The weather for the weekend was very mixed with Saturday rained off for most of the day, but Sunday with brilliant sunshine and a light breeze was simply exceptional and Sunday was the day when the scoring happened. In the men’s section Padraig Corrigan was the winner with a great score for 15 holes with 36pts. Joe Beirne was in second place only a point behind, with John Junior Prendergast coming third. The ladies’ section, coming home in first place playing off 8 with a great score, went to Lorna Irwin with 27pts. Joan Harney was second on 25pts with Ann Horkan third. This weekend coming will be another Turkey competition for all players so make sure your names are down.

Connacht Golf Conference

The inaugural Connacht Golf Industry Conference will take place at Knockranny House Hotel, Westport, on Sunday January 29. With the support of all 41 affiliated clubs in the region, this event will be a must visit for everybody involved in the industry, golfing enthusiasts and the trade in general. The event will be hosted by Westport Golf Club. A number of keynote speakers have been invited to make presentations to the trade on the morning and this will be followed by a golf services exhibition, which will be open to the public, free of charge. The event will give the local golfing trade an opportunity to discuss best practice and marketing through the social media among various other golf related matters. In turn, it is hoped that the gathering will help put the industry on a secure footing for 2012 and beyond. With in excess of 60 stands already showing interest in exhibiting at the conference, there should be lots to keep those attending the show occupied.

Mulranny

The final qualifying round of the Mulranny Park Hotel Winter League was completed at the weekend. The team of Liam Walsh, Christy McDonnell, JJ Mulchrone, and John Feeney maintained their position at the head of the table with 342 pts and will carry five bonus points into next week’s final. They had five points to spare over Dwayne Flynn, John McHugh, Noel O’Malley and Enda Lonergan. The last two qualification positions went to the teams of Tom Mulloy, Sean Heverin, Ollie Finnerty and Anto Lally, and Mick O’Donnell, John Joyce, Andy Davitt and Gabriel Dockery.

Next Sunday’s final will have a shotgun start at 10am and will consist of teams breaking into fourball betterball partnerships with aggregate scores, plus bonus points for the six leading qualifiers. The presentation will take place immediately afterwards in the Mulranny Park Hotel. The course will be closed to non winter league golfers from 9.45am.

The stableford competition, sponsored by Cox’s Bars and Restaurant, Castlebar, and run in conjunction with the winter league, was won by the in-form Liam Walsh on 35 pts. He pipped Fergus Rothwell and Noel O’Malley who both shot the same score. The annual general meeting of the club takes place on Tuesday, December 13 at 8pm.

Westport

Last weekend’s 15 hole gents’ competition was claimed by Peter Moran with a score of 36pts, Padraic Kennedy came home in second on 34pts, with JF O’Malley taking third also on 34pts. The club will host its annual senior citizens party on Monday, December 12 at 7pm.
