Seven months for drugs convictions

A Claremorris man who pleaded guilty to two separate counts of drug possession, and one charge of having drugs for sale or supply, was given a total of seven months in prison in Claremorris District Court this week.

The court was told by Garda Russell Gibbons that he arrested Aaron Lynch, 45 Clareville, Claremorris on September 13 2010. Garda Gibbons stated he was on duty in Claremorris town at 2.05am on the date in question when a bouncer from the Millennium night-club approached him and told him there was a man whom he thought was selling drugs in the premises. Lynch was then escorted from the night-club by two other bouncers and when Garda Gibbons stopped and searched him, he found a bag with what turned out to be 65 ecstasy tablets in Lynch’s pocket, valued at €325.

Garda Gerry Conroy told the court that he received information from a registered informant on January 6, 2011 that there was a quantity of drugs at Lynch’s home and he obtained a search warrant on foot on this information. He carried out a search with members of the drugs unit and they found a quantity of cannabis valued at €40.67 in the house. The court was also told that Lynch had a number of previous convictions for drugs offences.

For possession of ecstasy for sale or supply, Judge Mary Devins convicted and sentenced Lynch to four months in prison. For the possession of cannabis on January 6 2011, she convicted and sentenced him to three months in prison to be served consecutively.
