The welcome to Mayo sign on the Charlestown bypass is the “most miserable sign” and is “disgraceful’ commented Councillor Blackie Gavin at the Roads and Transportation SPC on Monday.
Member of the SPC, Mr Eddie Lavelle raised the issue of signage in the county following reports that three signs for Ballina on the N17 have been removed, with two of these signs now replaced with signs to tourist areas instead. Mr Lavelle said that the “people of Ballina are infuriated” and he urged the committee to propose a resolution that these signs be erected.
This was seconded by chair of the SPC, Cllr Jarlath Munnelly who queried the removal of signs and added that the signage to the county from national routes is not adequate.
Cllr Jimmy Maloney said that the NRA “seem to be like Hitler” with their signs and speed limits.
The SPC was informed that there is an NRA policy document about how signage is designed and that the Mayo sign on the Charlestown bypass is in fact the standard correct size.
