Council has plans for old Castlebar library

The issue of the old library at Mountain View, Castlebar was raised at the May meeting of Castlebar Town Council this week. Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne brought up the issue as a derelict site. “I raised this issue before at Mayo County Council level and I was told it was the town council’s responsibility. I’ve checked the derelict site register and it’s not even listed on it.

“I want a written report on it for the next meeting,” he stated. Town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting that he has been assured that the issue will be dealt with.

“That’s all fine and well, but we rightly pursue business people who have derelict sites in the town, but Mayo County Council are allowed to have one in the town,” Cllr Kilcoyne responded.

Cllr Frank Durcan supported Cllr Kilcoyne’s stance, but told the meeting: “It’s up to us to take legal action but that would be a ridiculous situation, the town council taking legal action against the county council.” Mr Granahan told the meeting that there were plans in place to do a number of works at Mountain View in conjunction with the county council in the near future and it would be taken care of.
