Othello at the Linenhall

Bruiser, one of Ireland’s most exciting theatre companies, presents a dazzling new production of Shakespeare’s Othello at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday, April 6 at 8pm. Bruiser Theatre Company explodes onto the stage with an electrifying contemporary take on Shakespeare’s most brutal and gripping thriller-tragedy of love, paranoia, jealousy and murder. This Bruiser adaptation is bareknuckle Shakespeare for today, in an adaptation by the award-winning Patrick J O’Reilly. None of Shakespeare’s script is modernised, yet those who might be fearful of the Bard will find this gritty, breathless drama both exhilarating and relevant! On previous form, this is one not to miss!

Carney comes to Áras Inis

Singer songwriter Gerry Carney is well known for his original ballads, based on everyday simple storylines. Gerry was born and raised near Ballyhaunis, where he still resides. His infectious lyrics are testament to his ability to write about all aspects of life. As well as being a talented composer and singer, Gerry is also an accomplished guitar player, having played with a number of bands and groups during the 1980s and 90s, prior to departing on a solo career. The Prodigy at Mayo Movie World

Next Thursday evening, March 31, Mayo Movie World will be screening The Prodigy - World’s on Fire show recorded live at thea Warriors Dance Festival, in Milton Keynes last July. This one night only show will get underway at 9.30pm and tickets are on sale from Mayo Movie World.

Céide bring some trad to the Linenhall

Top traditional outfit Céide brings its distinctive music to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday March 30 at 8pm, along with special guests, new vocal group Coda. Based in Mayo, Céide is known both locally, nationally and internationally as a top-drawer group of musicians who invest great care and time into their music. The six-piece line-up (Brian Lennon - flute/whistles/vocals; John Mc Hugh - fiddle; Tom Doherty - accordion/melodeon; Kevin Doherty - bass/cello/whistle; Marianne Knight - vocals/flute/bodhrán; Declan Askin - guitar ) has recorded two critically acclaimed albums, Like a Wild Thing and Out of Their Shell, playing music that reflects its individual style and influences.

Appearing with Céide for this concert is a new eight-man a capella group Coda, comprising eight singers: Declan Askin, Mike Cannon, Steve Bryant, Leonard Kelly, Brian Lennon, Alan Drumm, Conal O’Domhnaill and Ultan Molloy.

Cineclub na nÓg

The next Cineclub na nÓg gathering will take place in Áras Inis Gluaire on Saturday, April 2, from 1pm. to 3.30pm. For those of you who don’t know what Cineclub is – it’s a bilingual, junior film club which allows children (age five to 12 ) to enjoy a film in our state-of-the-art cinema and, afterwards, discuss the movie with the facilitators and draw pictures! It’s a fantastic, fun environment in which the children can express themselves as Gaeilge and as Bearla outside of school. Admission is €10 per child. Family discount of 15 per cent applies. St Joseph’s exhibition at the Linenhall

We Are The Artists is an exhibition by the students of St Joseph’s Secondary School, Castlebar, which opened in the Linenhall Arts Centre this week. The diverse and engaging show includes junk couture fashion design, ceramics, textile design, interior design painting, short animation films, graphic design and observational drawings. The exhibition runs until Thursday next March 31.

Mayo actress in search for Storyland success

Local actress Grace Kelley from Westport, needs your vote to keep starring in RTÉ’s new online drama series, Free House. The second episode of Free House was released on March 23 at www.rte.ie/storyland The public voting will remain open until Tuesday March 29. Whether or not there’s a third or fourth episode for Grace to star in completely depends on public votes. The series that makes it through all four rounds of public votes gets the chance to have their own TV series with RTÉ. Former winners include Hardy Bucks on RTÉ 2.
