Teacher convicted of drink driving

A teacher was disqualified from driving for three years at this week’s sitting of Castlebar District Court after he pleaded guilty to drink driving.

On June 6 2010, gardaí who were attending an incident in Balla observed a car being driven by Noel Lyons, Brize, Claremorris. The patrol car, who had its lights and sirens activated followed Lyons, however the defendant failed to stop and instead took off at speed.

Lyons eventually stopped at Rathduff, Balla. He was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving and provided a breath sample which gave a reading of 72mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

The court heard that the defendant was going through some difficulties in his personal life at the time and is off sick from teaching.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Lyons €500 and disqualified him from driving for three years.
