Council nominates Ó Muircheartaigh for Pádraig Pearse award

The members of Mayo County Council this week nominated legendary broadcaster Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh for the Pádraig Pearse award.

The award has been presented since 1980 to people who best exemplify the ideals of Pearse who worked to promote the fields of education, art, literature, civil liberties, and the media in the community.

Ó Muircheartaigh was proposed by Fine Gael councillor Henry Kenny and seconded by Fianna Fáil's councillor Al McDonnell. The two major parties in the chamber had met previously to sort out the nomination with the idea of nominating Ó Muircheartaigh coming from the Fianna Fáil side of the house and agreement from Fine Gael.
