Shirtless man covered in blood arrested in Belmullet hotel

A man who was shirtless and whose hands were covered in blood when arrested in the Broadhaven Hotel, Belmullet was before Belmullet District Court this week.

Kevin Kilcoyne, Bayview, Binghamstown, Belmullet was arrested on Saturday July 24 2010 at 4.25am by Garda Damien Hennigan, who attended the hotel following a complaint of a public order incident.

Garda Hennigan observed that the defendant, who was in the smoking area with his mother, was shirtless and was in an intoxicated and aggressive manner. Kilcoyne’s hands were covered in blood and he clenched his fists in an aggressive manner towards gardaí. The defendant was verbally and physically aggressive towards gardaí as he was restrained.

The court heard that Kilcoyne has been set upon that night and that his aggression was not towards the gardaí but to those who did it to him and that he had only been trying to explain his side of the story to the garda when he was arrested.

Kilcoyne, who has no previous public order convictions, was convicted and fined a total of €350 by Judge David Anderson.

The defendant was also in court for drink driving on August 7 2010. The defendant was pulled over by gardai at 7.59am at Glencastle after he was detected speeding. The defendant who had been coming from a wedding the night before was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving. A breath specimen showed 54mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The defendant was not insured on his girlfriends car which he was driving that day

The 25-year-old who is to commence work in a local quarry, has previous road traffic convictions.

Judge Anderson convicted and fined him €250 for no insurance and €500 for drink driving. Kilcoyne was disqualified from driving for two years and a day.

Recognisances were fixed.
