Ballina scoops double gold at indoor master championships

Ernie Caffrey and Padraig Maye of Ballina Athletic Club put in resounding performances at the All Ireland Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nenagh last weekend. Each man took home two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. Ernie Caffrey won gold in the M70 category in the 60m sprint and 200m, silver in the shot putt, and bronze in the long jump with a personal best in same. Padraig Maye won gold in the M70 category in the shot putt and high jump, silver in the long jump, and bronze in the 60m. These are two remarkable men who organise their own training sessions and compete successfully at this level in an array of events.

Mayo AC to hold AGM tonight

The annual general meeting of Mayo AC will be held tonight, Friday, in the Breaffy GAA Centre starting at 8.30pm. Among the items on the agenda will be a review of a very busy and successful 2010 and an outline of plans for 2011.

Mayo AC does well in Tuam 8k

Mayo AC was well represented with 14 athletes taking part in the recent Tuam 8k. Ronnie Naylor was first Mayo AC man home and finished in second place in his category, with Angela O’Connor first female Mayo AC athlete home, coming fifth overall in the women’s race and second in her category. The Mayo AC competitors were Ronald Naylor, Michael McNeela, Jimmy Feeney, Dominic Regan, Angela O’Connor, PJ Hall, Christy O’Malley, Ann Murray, Owen Mongan, Chris O’Connell, Joan Walsh, John Timothy, Seamus Ronayne, and Joseph Fahey.

Smith continues to reach new heights

Two weeks ago Allan Smith, Ballina Athletic Club, won the AAI junior high jump championship in Nenagh. Last weekend he went one further when he travelled to Wales for the Welsh National junior and senior indoor open championships in Cardiff. On Saturday he captured the junior title and on Sunday he captured the senior title. In the past few weeks he has increased his personal best twice, and set a Scottish athletics indoor league record of 2.10m. He is currently the leading ranked junior men’s high jumper in the UK and Ireland.
