€380,000 secured for accessibility works in Castlebar

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD, has welcomed the move by Mayo County Council to invest €380,000 in improving accessibility throughout Castlebar. The money will fund the provision and improvement of pedestrian crossings, special paving, the removal of any significant obstructions on footpaths, and properly dropped kerbs.

The Fine Gael Leader raised this issue last April following a meeting with the local director of services. He had also been in contact with a local organisation involved with disabled children and a number of individuals campaigning to improve the situation.

Deputy Kenny said: “I welcome this new initiative that will allow for a planned programme of improvements throughout the town making it easier for people with mobility difficulties. It will be 2009 before any of these improvements take place, however, in the interim period, like I said last April, I would hope that businesses and motorists would consider wheelchair users, persons with reduced mobility and people with prams, in order to make their daily journeys and events fairer and easier.”
