Drunk man told gardaí ‘we run this f***ing town’

An intoxicated man, who after he threatened to smash windows of a pub, ran from gardaí and shouted that his family, the McDonaghs, “run this f*****g town”, was convicted and fined at Castlebar District Court this week.

On August 22 at 7.08pm, gardaí were called to a disturbance at The Half Cut Bar, Rush Street, Castlebar, where Bernie McDonagh, 63 Lakeview, Castlebar, was observed to be in an aggressive and intoxicated state outside the premises.

A large crowd had gathered outside the pub and McDonagh was heard to threaten to break the windows of the bar.

When Garda Fergal O’Gara attempted to arrest the defendant, McDonagh ran up the street, took off his football shirt and shouted: “We are the champions, we run this f***ing town... we are the McDonaghs, we run this f***ing town.”

The defendant was arrested on Rush Street. The next day McDonagh apologised for his actions. The defendant has previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €300.
