Majella Clancy exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre

Throughout the month of May, Ballina Arts Centre will host Overlap, an exhibition of work by Majella Clancy. Overlap features work from Clancy’s ongoing investigation into painted space/place. Working from an archive of photographic imagery taken from various sources, she is interested in creating real and imagined spaces through the translation and mistranslation’ of the collected imagery.

Through the process of digital manipulation and paint the images become removed from their original source allowing ambiguity to enter between the painted and photographic elements. Colour plays an important role in how the paint is applied to allow for various readings of pictorial space, blurring the distinctions between perceptions of reality and memory, technology and technique. The notion of what can be considered real changes with the shifting sense of focus and perspective dependent on the viewer’s physical and figurative point of view. Free admission. All are welcome to attend, exhibition runs until May 29.

Top trad trio for Ballina Arts Centre

Music Network’s May Irish traditional tour, Do Bhíosa Lá i bPortláirge, sees piper David Power, flute player Ciarán Somers and fiddler Fionn Mac Goilla Chuda explore the music of the south east and unearth a veritable treasure trove of music with its origins in the Co Waterford Gaeltacht and the surrounding region. Catch them at Ballina Arts Centre on Thursday May 27 at 8pm.

The title of this traditional Irish tour, which means “I spent a day in Waterford”, is the first line of a song once heard in national schools across the country. Could its catchy melody be influenced by the sunny local climate? Leading the charge is virtuoso Uilleann piper David Power, former All-Ireland winner and a member of Liam Clancy’s Fairweather Band in the early 90s. In recent years, he has recorded two highly-acclaimed solo albums, as well as performing alongside such trad luminaries as Tony Mac Mahon and Máirtín O’Connor.

Joining David is flute player Ciarán Somers, a native of Mhuine Bheag, Co. Carlow, who is noted for his musical links with Brittany: his recent CD Faoi Bhláth was recorded there with fiddler Dave Sheridan and Breton guitarist Nicolas Quemener, formerly of Arcady. Dubliner Fionn Mac Goillachuda first fell in love with trad music in An Rinn and later returned there to record two CDs with local musicians. In addition to numerous TV and radio appearances he has toured in Japan and across Europe in the distinguished company of The Helvick Heads, Dónal Clancy and Gorumna. Tickets cost €12 and booking is advised.
