DJs Johnny and Finbar launched their first soul night in Rowlands Bar way back in 2006. They were relative newcomers to the soul scene in Castlebar although Finbar Hoban had made his DJ debut back in 2001 in the Humbert Inn, which had also seen the likes of DJs Dave Barry and Uggie Horkan take the role of serving up some splendid soul and northern soul nights back at the turn of the decade.
When Finbar was recently asked what encouraged him to take up Djing he replied by telling me that a good friend gave him some good advice and it just went from there. “I used to love going to Brazilia night-club in the TF in Castlebar in the late nineties and watch and listen to the likes of DJs Dave Barry and Uggie Horkan along with Andrew Rattigan serve up some delightful soul dishes. It was great at the time to see this excellent music scene take off around Castlebar. Listening to tunes from Parliament, Shuggie Otis, Otis Redding, Bob Marley, Gloria Jones, Dobie Gray, and so on. You could always tell that the last track of the night was either going to be Blister in the Sun from The Violent Femmes or Gloria Jones’ Tainted Love, they were great times. So this Sunday night will be a wonderful opportunity to once again play a gig with Johnny.”
It has been almost two years since Johnny and Finbar last played together, on that fateful night in Rowlands Bar in Castlebar there was lots of dancing produced and what a night that was. This should be a great night for fans of soul, ska, and reggae music, and if you like music from the likes of the incredible Specials, Desmond Dekker, The Heptones, James Brown, Funkadelic, Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone then this will be the perfect night for all you fans of soul music to throw on those dancing shoes!
