By-pass route back in Kiltimagh area plan

The threat of a huge proportion of the town of Kiltimagh being sterilised for planning, as a result of an amendment which was made to the Kiltimagh local area plan, was averted at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council this week.

While the Swinford area meeting the previous week, in which a number of changes were proposed by Fine Gael councillor Eugene Lavin, took more than five hours to deliberate the issue, the whole thing was dealt with in less than 10 minutes at Monday’s full meeting of the council. Last week Cllr Lavin proposed that both the new link road and the proposed bypass which were included in the plan be removed from the plan, which would have potentially made a large portion of the town unavailable for future development, as a new study route for the area and the bypass would have to be drawn up. But at Monday’s meeting, Cllr Lavin proposed that the bypass be retained in the plan, but he maintained that the link road between the Balla and Bohola roads be excluded from the plan. His motion was seconded by Cllr Joe Mellett.
