A total of 30 teams are participating in this year’s spring league and the competition is made up of both ladies’ and men’s members. The first round was played in ideal conditions last Sunday and the course was in great shape despite the recent cold spell of weather. Winners on the day were: Craig Doherty, Des Cronin, Jerome Tuohy, and Marie Forde with a nett score of 44.8.

The second round of the league will be played on Sunday March 7 and the tee times are posted on the main notice boards. A number of subs are available to fill in where team members are missing and this can be done by contacting a member of the competitions’ committee.

Westport

Colm O’Neill’s team will go into the matchplay stages of the Winter League as strong favourites to capture the 2010 title. Another strong team performance saw them win the back nine competition with a very impressive 48 points. Bill Hopkins’ team won the front nine competition on a point less.

However, defending GOY winner Neil Chambers may feel that his name is on the trophy having secured the final position at 16th seed by the slimmest of margins. He edged out Pat McNulty with a better last three hole score on the fourth qualifying card. The full matchplay draw is on the web-site and first round qualifiers are reminded to have their matches played before the deadline, which is this Sunday March 7.

As the only ladies team to secure two victories during the six week event, it was fitting that Nuala Hopkins along with team members Colette Fleming, Mary Feeney, and Natashia Collins managed to secure third place on Sunday last in the ladies’ Winter League and so secure the 2010 title.
