Kenny’s men go after tribesmen

Soccer

This was all supposed to be taken care of by now, but the weather set in and Mayo’s Oscar Traynor trip to Terryland was called, off then it was supposed to take place in Milebush and that had to be pulled too. That was before Christmas and now on Sunday, weather permitting, Brendan Kenny’s Mayo side will be able to try to book their place in the knock out stages of the Oscar Traynor Trophy. Mayo have been handed home advantage for the tie, due to the original postponement.

The weather conditions have hampered both sides’ ability to get together around the Christmas period, but Mayo were due to meet up on Tuesday night and again tonight (Friday ) in advance of the game, to get things set out for the contest on Sunday. While a draw will do for Mayo thanks to their superior goal difference, Kenny will have them in fear of any complacency setting in ahead of the game. In last season’s game Mayo picked up the 1-0 win they needed to march onto the semi-final of the competition where they lost out to AUL Dublin. A similar result on Sunday would do rightly for Kenny and his men.

Wallace takes over at Snugboro

Former Mayo Oscar Traynor manager and former Snugboro United player Mick Wallace has taken over the hot seat in the Castlebar suburb for next season. The Scot, who played in goal for the club a few years back, will take over the manager’s seat from Johan Collins who stepped down from the job earlier in the season. Wallace took charge of the Mayo league side for one campaign in the 2006/2007 competition and before he gets settled in for preparations for the 2010 season his side still have one outstanding fixture against Westport United from last season to complete.
