Deere warns of dangers of people walking on frozen lakes

Castlebar Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere has warned of the dangers of people walking on frozen lakes and river surfaces. While many of these surfaces appear to be strong enough to support the weight of a person, the risk of any ice breaking is very high and could lead to serious accidents. The dangerously cold weather is making this particularly hazardous as the water is extremely cold.

“I have witnessed many people walking on Lough Lannagh recently since it has frozen over,” Cllr Deere said. “Some people were skating on the lake while others may have been following their pets as they ran onto the frozen surface. I urge all the people visiting such locations to be as cautious as possible and avoid walking on the ice as it is completely unsafe.”
