Significant funding for five Mayo piers and harbours

Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has announced funding of €236,250 for piers and harbours within the constituency under the 2008 Clár Coastal Development Scheme.

The funding is being made available by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

In total 26 projects across the country have been selected for funding, with five such projects in Mayo – namely Purteen, Bundorragha, Cloghans, Bertra and Roigh.

Purteen Pier will receive €11,250, bringing total funding for the project to €30,000; Bundorragha has been allocated €75,000, bringing total funding to €200,000; work to the hard stand of the slipway at Cloghans, Corraun has been granted a further €37,500, bringing its total to €100,000; the coastal erosion project at Bertra has been granted €37,500, bringing the total to €100,000; while the provision of a wall, car parking and a new slipway at Roigh, Newport West has been allocated €75,000, bringing total funding to €200,000.

“This represents a very significant investment in our piers and harbours and I would like to thank Minister Ó Cuív and Minister Killeen for their favourable response to our request for funding on this occasion. These improvements facilitate, improve safety and ease of operations and lead to increased landings in these small harbours, which in turn provide increased employment opportunities in the areas.

“Piers, harbours and coastal protection works are key elements in the social and economic infrastructure of these coastal communities, and I expect that these works will have a long-term positive impact on Mayo's coastal communities," he said.
