Shell to sea protester obtains summonses against gardaí

Prominent Shell to Sea campaigner Niall Harnett, Bar Na Cuille, Pullathomas, made an application to Judge Denis McLoughlin at Belmullet District Court on Wednesday for the issuing of four summonses against Superintendent Michael Larkin and Sergeant Gus Moran for an incident which occurred in May of this year.

Harnett, who took the stand, said that his two applications against Supt Michael Larkin were for the fact that on May 9 at 10pm at Bar na Coile, the superintendent obstructed Harnett’s passage to the Rossport Solidarity camp, through use of a Garda checkpoint which prevented his vehicle from moving and that his personal liberty was restricted through false imprisonment.

The next two summonses against Sgt Moran, which were for the same incident, were based on the fact that a Garda vehicle physically blocked his passage and restricted his liberty without consent.

Harnett said that oral testimony and video evidence would substantiate the vehicles used in the case.

Judge Denis McLoughlin considered the applications during court proceedings and when the court resumed after lunch the judge said that he would grant the issuing of all four summonses.
