Castlebar's Newstand closes its doors after more than 30 years

Newstand - located on Market Square in Castlebar - has closed its doors after 33 years of serving the community in the county town.

Speaking about the decision to close after three decades, Helen McHale said: "It’s difficult to say goodbye. After 33 years of running Newstand, it was with a heavy heart that I made the decision to retire and move on to the next stage in my life.

"When we first started trading in Newstand the area was devoid of other commercial outlets. In fact, we were the first of four outlets to open adjacent to Dunnes Stores. The rest of the area was a greenfield site known locally as Hopkins field. We did not even have the benefit of street lighting. We very quickly established ourselves as a progressive leading Newsagents. Followed rapidly with many successful Lotto winners and became affectionately known as Newstand, 'the lucky lotto shop'.

"This could not have been achieved were it not for the wonderful loyal support of many customers, some now spanning three generations of families. l never considered it work as our days were filled with joy, laughter and such kindness. This will always remain with us and that’s why it’s so difficult to say goodbye.

"We were very fortunate over the years to have the benefit of wonderful staff and in particular I would like to sincerely thank our current members, Vivienne, Mary, Diane and Olwyn, who are renowned for their customer service.

"So many of our customers have commented how they will miss Newstand and the smiling faces who are always courteous and helpful and for that we extend our sincere thanks to the ladies of Newstand for their loyalty, support and wonderful kindness."
