Mayo Co Co encourages the public to explore different transport modes during European Mobility Week

Europeans love variety – in food, in fashion, in music – so why is it that when it comes to transport so many of us stick to one mode?

This year’s European Mobility Week is all about encouraging people to explore the many different options available for getting from A to B, and to think about the mode that best suits a particular journey.

European Mobility Week commences on Sunday September 16 with a focus on ‘multimodality’ - the mixing of transport modes within the same journey or for different trips. Discussions will be raised as to why so many of us instinctively opt for the same method of transport when moving, around without necessarily examining the needs of the specific journey.

The car may be the best way to take your family to the seaside, for example, but is it the best way to get to work in the morning?

To encourage Smarter Travel, Mayo County Council is hosting a number of staff events for European Mobility Week to include Carpool Tuesday, Walk on Wednesday, Cycle on Thursday and a Culture Night Bike Buffet.

Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes added: "Mayo County Council has recently become a Smarter Travel Workplace Partner. We understand the importance of choosing more sustainable modes of transport, both to protect our environment and improve our health and are taking positive steps to allow and encourage our staff to choose smarter travel and enjoy the benefits."

This year, Mayo County Council is encouraging staff and the public to try out different transport modes such as cycling to the gym to get a head start on burning calories, walking to school to get some fresh air in the morning, or carpooling to work.

Introducing sustainable transport modes into journeys, can not only lead to a positive impact on the environment, it may also help people become fitter and happier, while benefiting from some extra spending money too.
